COMPLY

April Bey - "Comply", Coagula Curatorial, February 2017

OPENING RECEPTION:
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18
7 - 11 PM

Coagula Curatorial is pleased to present Comply — an exhibition of installation art, paintings, drawings and interdisciplinary hybrids by artist April Bey. Comply includes a body of work that explores the actual resilience of women as they navigate through high-impact experiences of the body, psyche and demands of womanhood. Works pick up the subtle hypocrisy in the expectations of women and in the artist’s case— black women —to be robust while at the same time inept and emotionally weak when a leadership role is sought.

Bey’s work presents a series of portraits of real women who were interviewed while on artist residency in Ghana, West Africa and from whom each fabric in the exhibit was purchased. The work also includes celebrity portraits such as Beyoncé, Solangé and The Venus of Willendorf— comparing and contrasting ideas of feminism and social media Hashtag activism. For this exhibit, the artist's process was rule-based, with all materials that intersect with the Hitarget wax fabric being made in China. The needles, thread, fabric, needle threaders are all low-quality products made in China but that market to black women who are surviving poverty.

Comply is on view from February 18 – April 2, with an artist's reception being held on Saturday, February 18 from 7 – 11 PM. The gallery is open Wed- Fri, 1-6pm, Sun 1-4pm, & by appt.
